Allianz pro Schiene, VDB and index GmbH support companies in recruiting skilled workers. By the end of November over 98,000 vacancies had been advertised in the rail industry in the year 2024, with high demand for talent in the fields of engineering, construction, transportation and logistics in particular.
Associations and companies from the rail industry are working together to find a solution to the growing demand for personnel in the rail sector. Alliance pro Schiene, the German Railway Industry Association (VDB) and index Internet und Mediaforschung GmbH want to strengthen and expand the SchienenJobs.de career portal together. The aim is to attract young talents, women and international specialists and make them aware of the wide range of entry and career opportunities in the rail industry.
There is a great need for qualified specialists in the industry, as 50 percent of operational employees will retire by 2030. “We want to tackle the shortage of skilled workers with a cross-association industry approach. Only together can we succeed in reaching enough people to build the mobility of the future,” said VDB Managing Director Sarah Stark and went on to emphasize: ”The rail industry offers versatile, modern and future-proof jobs. Start locally, grow within the company or use the industry's global options. Everything is possible. We want to make this much more visible to the public.” SMEs will also play a central role on the platform. In one train alone, 70 percent of value creation comes from SMEs. It is precisely this potential in small and medium-sized companies that should be made more visible in future via RailJobs.
The rail industry creates almost 400,000 direct jobs in Germany, 56,600 in the industry alone. The proportion of female employees in the German rail industry is currently 20 percent. There is a need for action to bring more diversity into the industry. Dirk Flege, Managing Director of Allianz pro Schiene: “The shortage of skilled workers is undoubtedly a major challenge for the industry, but also a great opportunity. It is important that we not only talk about the difficulties, but also work together to find solutions. The rail industry knows no boundaries: It is looking for female engineers as well as female designers and site managers. The industry wants to become more female, and it wants to represent all parts of society. We don't just want to show this once a year at the rail industry festival Tag der Schiene. Together, we want to spend 365 days promoting the fact that the rail industry is open to anyone looking for a secure future and a job that makes sense and contributes to the climate.”
By the end of November, 98,177 vacancies had been advertised in the rail industry this year, with high demand for talent in the fields of engineering, construction, transportation and logistics in particular. The career portal SchienenJobs.de automatically records vacancies in the sector. The system draws on a database of more than 40 million job advertisements and only displays current vacancies without any additional work for the companies. “We can showcase the potential of the rail industry on SchienenJobs.de and create a central point of contact that efficiently brings skilled workers and companies together. In this way, we promote access to talent, increase visibility and send a strong signal for cooperation and innovation,” explained Jürgen Grenz, both Managing Director of index Internet Mediaforschung GmbH and Managing Director of SchienenJobs GmbH.
Back in 2013 Allianz pro Schiene and index Internet und Mediaforschung GmbH created the first comprehensive job portal for rail professions. The VDB was already a supporter when the portal was founded and is now strategically expanding the partnership with a shareholding in SchienenJobs GmbH. The VDB will also be involved in the joint development of expertise in the “Staff & SchienenJobs” thematic network of the Allianz pro Schiene.
